Frame identification by frame number
The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages. My philosophy of old bikes probably won’t be approved by most purists. I am not interested in creating museum pieces; I have no interest in a bike I can’t ride. I don’t have the time, inclination, or energy to research any bike in detail and to determine its original configuration, down to the last lockwasher.

Few roadies would put a Raleigh atop their list of dream bikes. Though the company is one of the oldest bike brands in the world, dating to , and despite the fact that its bikes were raced extensively in the pro peloton in the s, including to victory at the Tour de France, the brand has mostly been associated with cruiser bikes and low-end rides in recent years.
However, the company has new owners and a fresh vision and is working hard to reshape perceptions of the brand. The Cycle Life Looking for a new ride?
Raleigh Bikes has a long lineage of working with illustrators dating back to To continue that lineage, the OCS was commissioned to create two unique posters which captured the timeless qualities which make Raleigh and their riders unique.

Danish bicycle VIN-system
MOT scrapped for pre s vehicles Back in November we reported that this was on the cards, and now it’s official. From 18th November , the UK MOT annual inspection test will be scrapped for vehicles manufactured before , unless used for hire and reward carrying paying passengers. The reason is simple:
The Danish bicycle VIN-system is a system introduced in by the Danish government, providing all bicycles in Denmark with a unique code. The code is a combination of letters and digits embedded into the bicycle frame and consists of a manufacturer code, a serial number, and construction year code.. Since , it has been illegal to sell bicycle frames in Denmark without an embedded VIN.
Seat lug serial number, mens’ Seat lug serial number, ladies’ Dropout serial number, Super Course and Grand Prix Alternate serial system shown Serial convention: At present, I have insufficent information about the serial numbers from this era to construct a definite chart of every example used during this time period. At least 4 or 5 different systems were used. I have uncovered two of them to a reasonable extent; both of which ran concurrently to each other during this time period: This system showed its face in I have named it accordingly , and was phased out in mid Evidence indicates that a handful of ‘ ’71 frames – or their lugs, depending on when the stamping was done – may not have been released from the factory until , and were consequently decaled as models.
This is the only explanation I can suggest regarding this issue.
Determining the Age of a Raleigh
Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.
nice bike, I got one of these a few months ago from a friend for free and threw on a new back rim as the original one got warped after riding alot. i also painted the tires black and put on orange griptape and underglow on this badlarry.
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.
The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps.
Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality. Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand. Don’t all cyclists have boxes and boxes of old components in their garage? Most early Treks through about were sold as framesets. The components were added by the local bike shop or by the buyer.

Although the Sports Model was the original backbone of the range, it was the Raleigh 20 which really set the sales records. Slightly cruder than the original Nottingham version, the 20 was nevertheless a sturdy machine which suffered very few problems over its long production life. It was made of local steel, and the main tube was of slightly smaller diameter than the original.
In another departure, the bracing tubes from the main tube to the bottom bracket were missing. This last feature allowed the production of a fully detachable version which was, I think, unique to NZ. The bike originally came fitted with the usual Raleigh equipment: Also fitted was a wiring system for dynamo lights, which ran through the main tube and through copper contact plates at the shotgun style joint. I modified mine to 20 x 1. The bike has been transformed, and is now very nippy, thanks to the full pound each wheel has shed!
Cable splitting is yet to be tackled.

Larger Image The name says it all – the top of the Schwinn line. Schwinn today is part of Pacific Cycle. While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price. The bike had belonged to her uncle who no longer used it.
I believe the frame was built in The same site has the original price list.
Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud.
Note: This is a sub-section of Raleigh Cycle Co.. Using an imported Schwan engine, the first motorcycle was built. It was belt driven and mounted over the front wheel. A much better and stronger machine, with a 3hp engine set vertically ahead of the pedals, then made an appearance.
In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. These publications have been invaluable in adding accuracy to the information — but even including their data there are still well over makes of possible lightweights to be confused over! The author would be grateful to know of any inaccuracies and to receive further information to make the tables more comprehensive.
For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number. Nervex, the lug maker, also had their name on their BB lugs with a long design serial number. Make a note of where on the BB the number is and its orientation — for example, is it upright or inverted for reading when lifting the front wheel up with the rear wheel still on the ground? Is it central or on the left or right flange of the BB as seen from this upright view?
Some builders stamped the numbers parallel to the edge of the BB, yet others are random when compared over the years. Most builders also stamped the frame number on the steerer tube of the front forks — but you may not wish to strip the machine down for this and in any case the forks may have been changed over the years. It can be worthy of note however that as sometimes very thick layers of paint can make the main frame number difficult to read —the steerer tube number is the only reliable evidence!
Granby before used to punch the number on the underside of the head tube —along the bottom edge of the fork crown. See Table 2 Is it a plain serial number or does it have some preceding numbers or letters a prefix or perhaps has some numbers or letters that follow the main number a suffix? In order to be a prefix or suffix in this instance there should be a space between the number and the pre or suffix part, ot perhaps they are on a different line.
